Detailed Information:
Clearwater sails in the tidewater reaches of the Hudson River estuary from Albany, NY to Long Island Sound. The rigorous schedule of its model Classroom of the Waves education programs is maintained by the sloop from over 50 ports throughout the territory during its March to November season, averaging two three-hour sails per day. (On-land Discovery programs are also available).
Each week during sailing season, six volunteers join the crew to work, eat and sleep on the boat, helping with Classroom of the Waves education programs. Two apprentices each month help with boat maintenance; no experience necessary -- we train. Apprentices room and board on the boat in season, at the crew's winter quarters off-season and receive a weekly stipend. A special on-board Urban Outreach Internship is available for inner city youth from lower income communities. The internship offers a non-traditional work experience in the maritime field, focusing on leadership, teamwork, teaching and communications skills.
Clearwater's advocacy includes active participation in watchdog efforts to ensure the public and its elected officials are apprised of continuing environmental dangers, such as PCBs contamination, and their effects on the health and well-being of people and habitat alike.
