E-LAW was established in 1989 with the goals of protecting the environment through law and breaking downbarriers to information for environmental advocates around the world. The network consists of "Amigos" in morethan 40 countries. These are public-interest, environmental lawyers who in many cases are the first in their country topursue this calling. There are 14 co-equal E-LAW "offices," which serve as a kind of management committee for thenetwork. The Amigos from 40 countries constitute the core of the work and information-exchange of the network. E-LAWAmigos call on many sources for information. E-LAW Amigos do not charge any fees or costs for the informationthat they provide to one another. That information may consist of legal precedents, draft legislation, scientificinformation, or simply the low-down on some institution that is cruising around the world looking for weak spots inenforcement.
