Choose Environmental Excellence began in Kansas City in 1994 as a program of Bridging The Gap, a non-profit organization. They organized a partnership of business, government, and private citizens all acting together to improve environmental awareness and actions in the daily choices that thousands of individuals and institutions in the area make.
The have successfully encouraged 800 businesses, 23,500 individuals, and 30 cities to Choose Environmental Excellence throughout the Greater Kansas City Region. They have produced a range of seminars and workbooks educating a wide range of business sectors in how to Choose Environmental Excellence. After four-plus exciting years of success, Choose Environmental Excellence was funded so that the program could be made available at no charge to communities throughout Missouri. This funding was provided by the Environmental Improvement and Energy Resources Authority (EIERA), through the Missouri Market Development Program, the Missouri State Chamber of Commerce, the Conservation Federation of Missouri, and Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
Choose Environmental Excellence has spread from Kansas City to Greater St. Louis, Branson, Springfield, St. Joseph, and other towns and cities.
