Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE), the European branch of Friends of the Earth International (FoEI), is a network of 30 independent, national environmental organisations in 29 European countries. FoEE is deeply involved in the sustainable development debate and recognizes the need to change lifestyle and consumption patterns. With the project "Sustainable Europe", FoEE has defined concrete targets, timetables and political steps to reach a sustainable society on the national and European levels. FoEE coordinates and supports the campaigns and projects of its member groups, which deal with a large variety of subjects such as traffic, waste, recycling, EU-enlargement, sustainable tourism, EU structural funds, international financial institutions, trade, climate change and biotechnology. Through these activities FoEE aims to raise public awareness, to enhance the participation of people and environmental citizens organisations in political processes, and to influence political decision makers, especially on the European level. Friends of the Earth International (FoEI) was founded in 1971 by four organizations from France, Sweden, England and the USA. Today the federation has 59 members from all over the world, who campaign internationally, nationally and locally on major environmental issues. FoEI is one of the largest federations of organizations committed to the preservation, restoration and rational use of the environment. FoEI members are national organizations consisting of regional and/or local groups, many of them with strong grass-root connections. Each FoEI member is unique to its own country and culture, defining its own priorities, operating methods, legal structure, etc.
