MT Event; I had read an in depth paper on what was called Methane Turnover during advanced geology studies at the University of Minnesota early 1968. I had also read several on the Permian Great Dying, an MT Event horror story.
Heat buildup from ghgs to the oceans then to the point of spontaneous 164 x increase in volume of methane clathrate to methane gas.
Methane was here from cometary accretion, and was a "seed" molecule for life to evolve. With life there was death and with death became rot producing more methane. When formed in deep cold water, it gets encased by an ice crystal lattice and into hydrate /clathrate deposits at 700m deep. The pressure and cold hold the methane hydrate with a boiling point of minus 200C. It has the tendency to almost explode at higher temperature and lower pressure, with stability only at the cold depths.
The East Siberian Arctic Shelf was uplifted by a mantle convection plume over the past 150K years from 700m to only 50m deep. The difference is at that pressure, a temperature of 1.11C is all that is needed to start a chain reaction. At 700m deep it was 2.22C.
With human caused global warming, the bottom temperature of the ESAS has risen to .778C.
In the two major MT Events so far in Earth geologic history, it was a thousands of years buildup of CO2 from increased volcanic activity, which gradually warmed it up to the point of the shallowest methane clathrate deposits going into runaway self releases. This jumped the temperature and allowed deeper deposits to also let go. An impact into clathrate beds is also a possibility, with the seafloor crater since subducted. On impact, the opposite side of the globe cracked and caused the Siberian Traps on the supercontinent of the time, increasing CO2 even more. Rapid thermal rise ensued killing 95% of life forms. This time is 30-50 times faster, from HGHGs doing the dirty deed.
Mechanism for mass blowout; when one small area of methane clathrate almost explodes into methane gas, the shock of that goes to adjacent deposits and causes them to blow. Plus, slower, the methane gas over the Arctic causes greater heat buildup which goes into the sea and earth to detonate more tundra methane and cause deeper deposits to go. After thermal max it goes into increasing atmospheric methane or if ignited by lightning of the continuous acid rain storms, it goes directly to CO2 atmospheric increase and liquid water.

Sept 16, 2021 lowest ice 4.7 M Km2. This moves the Blue Ocean Event with methane runaway to 2024. Aren't we lucky? We get to live another year. It has been a vicious cycle. Kill predators>more people>greater and greater demands>industrialization>growth only economy>depletion of key resources and pollution of entire biosphere>mass die-off.
Similar to yeast in a vat of sugar water, breeding until either the sugar runs out or the waste kills them off. Supposedly intelligent creatures, who 'generally' could not think in long term or unselfishly. They lost the knowledge and connection to nature, skipped replenishing, and came to think of the Earth as infinite.
The development of the bow and arrow and the large spears killed many predators, and development of agriculture gave more food. Either one was a stimulus to the overpopulation to crash cycle. Industrialization accelerated collapse.
Plus, the geologic uplift of the Arctic methane clathrate deposits since the last interglacial became a set-up for an MT Event faster than the Permian Great Dying. Cyanobacteria will probably make it through to restore the atmosphere in millions of years.
The slowdown to peak population is beginning and rapid methane runaway to abrupt global heat rise to thermal maximum is 3-4 years away, with no food globally growable around 2027. Chaos, corruption on a global scale, increasing wildfires and drought effects already exist.
