Hi. I'm running a pet shop. It's now doing good since it's been 3 years ago when I first opened it. I have a grade 7 and 8 kiddos. Recently, I thought of the expenses when I send them to college. Aside from our pet shop and hubby's salary, I think I should start thinking of how I could save more for their college. Well, I'm sure some of you here know how expensive it is. What did you do and how were you able to go through all the expenses? :) |

I found that one could get a decent price for the first born to pay for the college education of the second born or possibly sell the second born to educate the first born depending on which was the bigger problem child. |

Joking aside, my oldest did just enough for acceptance form me during high school so I helped pay for his freshman year while he got a student loan for as much as he could. He did the same as in high school so I stopped helping him and he had to get more loans and work study to get through school. As he was now spending his money he buckled down and worked for his grades. When he graduated I had him send the loan notices to me and I paid them for him, but that was a few years ago and the whole system seems to be in danger of being eliminated now. |

My parents chose the 529 savings plan for my college education. But I'm not sure if I will ever choose it for my own child. He's only 2 now, and I'm finishing my third year, so I don't think it's the best time to start saving. What would you recommend in case? |

With the rising costs of education it is never too early to start saving. It will lessen the debt to be incurred later when the children go to school. |

Starting very early, as in pre-k, we hammered on and supported academic study. It was nearly as challenging for us parents. This ultimately led to admission to an international baccalaureate HS program. Combined with dual-language at home for 18 years (English & Spanish), and honor roll grades, our daughter got a free ride to a state university. Moral to this story is to prepare early, be it monetary savings and/or developing the skills necessary to succeed. We weren't rich and thus focused primarily on the latter. |
