Veteran environmental journalist aimable twahirwa joins mongabay to amplify africa’s climate stories

Award-winning science journalist Aimable Twahirwa is bringing 25 years of environmental reporting experience to his new role as Central and West Africa staff writer at Mongabay, joining the organization’s expanded effort to cover Africa’s critical biodiversity and climate challenges.
Based in Kigali, Rwanda, Twahirwa sees journalism as more than just reporting facts—he views it as a vital tool for building public resilience against misinformation. “Countering misinformation and science denial is critical to bolster public trust and fortify the news ecosystem against manipulation,” he explains. His approach focuses on what he calls “impact stories”—coverage that highlights urgent environmental issues and connects them with decision-makers who can drive meaningful change.
Throughout his career, Twahirwa has covered development, wildlife, and biodiversity issues across Rwanda, Central Africa, and East Africa. His in-depth features have appeared in prestigious publications including Nature, Thomson Reuters Foundation, SciDev.Net, and AllAfrica, contributing to long-term multimedia reporting projects that bring international attention to regional environmental challenges.
Since joining Mongabay in September 2024, Twahirwa has been working to ensure that Africa’s environmental stories—from the Congo Basin’s forests to Rwanda’s conservation successes—reach global audiences. His experience spans the continent’s most pressing ecological issues, making him well-positioned to translate complex environmental science into accessible reporting that can inform policy and inspire action on climate change and biodiversity conservation across Central and West Africa.
