What are you up to knight? There are so many kwotes from this article you could have used. The article spells out that the study was conducted by skeptics ( probably industrialists who stand to make some cash). Maybe you could have highlighted the article with the fact that "coal acts to mask greenhouse warming as it puts more tiny sulphate aerosol particles into the atmosphere which cool the planet by reflecting energy back into space" .... in so many words.

The article kwotes Piers Forster from the UK's Leeds University who led the IPCC chapter analysing factors affecting global temperatures. He said. "It needs to be emphasized that any masking is short lived and the increased CO2 from the same coal will remain in the atmosphere for many decades and dominate the long term warming over the next decades."

The actual content of the article kwickly dismisses the claim of the title of the very same article. Puts it to rest.

Actually, there was. The temperature records were set but there was not the increase in the 5 year average seen in some of the previous years. Just like was seen in other short periods of the record, such as the early 1990s.

No, it does not as the temperature record does show a lull, it just provides a more complete explanation to the causes of that lull.

The graph shows no lull from all the way from 1998 to 2008. The global dimming is real, but the main effects are more localized, like India's 10% dimming over the Maldives. China's soot effects are most pronounced in parts of China and under the brown cloud that stretches across the Pacific to the US NW. The little "lull" was certainly not for the entire 1998 to 2008 period as claimed. 2005 set heat records.

The graph shows a running 5 year mean, so it would not show an immediate lull in the temperature increase. The one year mean does show the record 2005 blip, but there were also some significant dips in the yearly mean just after that record. It does not mean there is no longer a warming trend, but just there are some short term impacts on that trend.

The Pinatubo eruption was more significant. Some day, there will come a time when all the particulates from human burning settle out. After the population crashes and oil is mostly depleted, the remainder of the coal stays in the ground, and no volcanic eruption to mask AGW>methane self release>to 10x more rapid and greater than PETM warming.
Right now, India's soot cloud is 7 times larger than the country, decreases the Maldive's crops 10% and settles out in the Arctic on ice, making it melt faster. Some places downwind of US coal plants get a 20% yield reduction and one area I read about caused an 80% reduction in pecan yields!!! Not far from you, Wayne.
The Chinese cloud is full of toxins that settle in the streets of Seattle, and some of the mercury goes much further--even to making pristine Rocky Mountain lakes' rainbow trout only safe to eat two per week. The Pacific fish are much worse, to the point of authorities not testing enough, but NGOs report that more than one serving per week is unsafe. It is in the runoff that goes into the Mississippi's Lake Erie sized dead zone.
The no fly days after 9-11 and the 2-3*F temperature jump, because contrails masked AGW. CO2 exhaust has increased 3% per year since then, with soots masking much of AGW, along with the contrails. Some of the soots the perfect size to start cancers. Personally, I think AGW at mid northern latitudes is +7*F(often). We know it is over +10*F above the arctic circle, and +1*F in the tropics and +3*F in Antarctica. So AGW is well beyond historic and is making new records in temperatures and weather effects. Even with the dimming and contrails that often mask most of it.
