Each had its own progressively lower population level. Sustainability means using the ecological systems and resources at the rates of regeneration, replenishment and absorption. Industrial society is near collapse, but unfortunately it won't happen until after tipping points for methane turnover are crossed in a few years. It is doubtful that humans will make it through their own ecocide.

This planet can only sustain Hunter_Gatherer Society or Agrarian Society.....It cannot sustain an Industrial Society....It cannot sustain an Urban Society that produces thousands of consumer goods and services instead of food.
An Industrial Society will always be cruel to millions of other species and to itself.}}so will hunter-gatherer and agrarian societies{{
A society that has destroyed all the natural resources of the planet will also destroy itself.}}which any type of society will do without predators or self-predation{{
After destroying biodiversity and ecosystems which sustained human life for millions of years man will not even exist.
Welfare of humans and millions of other species is only possible in a non-industrial society.}}actually, it is a matter of numbers for each type of society{{
Industrialization was the biggest crime on earth....The biggest act of killing, murder and terrorism on earth.
A hunter-gatherer society, if large enough, will kill off all animals and plants, then turn to cannibalism.
An agrarian society, if large enough, will use up all the soil and water, then also die off.
The real terrorism/crime is lust, greed, stupidity-ignorance, lack of thinking ahead of the consequences of ALL actions, and the resulting overpopulation/ecocide.

Jimi Hendrix;
"Oh uh,
I see fingers, hands and shades of faces,
Reachin up and not quite touchin the promised land,
I hear pleas and prayers and a desperate whisper sayin,
Oh Lord, please give us a helpin hand,
Yeah yeah
Way down in the background,
I can see frustrated souls of cities burnin,
And all across the water vapor,
I see weapons barkin out the sting of death,
And up in the clouds I can imagine UFO's jumpin themselves,
Laughin they sayin,
Those people so uptight, they sure know how to make a mess
Back in the saloon my tears mix and mildew with my drink,
I can't really tell my feet from the sawdust on the floor,
But as far as I know, they may even try to wrap me up in cellophane and try and sell me
Brothers sell me, and don't worry about lookin at the score
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah"
