It is more than industrial society that destroys the mind and environment; it is overpopulation itself.
http://www.cosmosmith.com/human_population_crisis.htmThis issue was discussed earlier on this thread.
Overpopulation is a result of science, technology and industrialization.
The two things that have destroyed Environment are - Overpopulation and Overconsumerism. Science and Technology is responsible for both these problems. World population was less than 1 billion in the year 1800 - today it is 6.5 billion. Nature had its way of controlling population through disease and death caused by bacteria and virus. When man made medicines/ antibiotics he created disaster - population increased very rapidly. In the absence of "Industrial Agriculture" the feeding capacity of soil would have kept population under control. If Industrial Revolution had not happened, environmental destruction due to production of consumer goods would not exist. In the absence of Science, Technology and "Industrial Revolution" we would not be facing the two problems that have caused destruction of ecosystems - overpopulation and overconsumerism.
A lot of efforts have been made to control/ reduce population. There is one child policy in China. Most families in urban India are now having one/ two children. Other countries have also tried to check population growth. In the absence of these efforts world population would be much greater than 6.5 billion today.
An equivalent example does not exist for Overconsumerism.
The world has not made efforts to reduce consumerism.
All countries have been increasing Growth Rate, Economy Rate and GDP in the last 50 years. The number of consumer goods in most homes has been increasing over the last 50 years.

This may be one of the single most insane things I've ever read on this forum. Are you actually LAMENTING the success of modern medicine? Do you realize how much unnecessary human suffering, especially amongst children, has been prevented by things like vaccines, surgeries, and medicine? Only a true, hardcore environmentalist ideologue would say something this incredibly morally bankrupt. This kind of rhetoric is EXACTLY why the most radical of environmentalists are not taken seriously, much like the AR radicals are not taken seriously, amongst the majority of society. What will you do, sushilydv, when cures are eventually found for horrible scourges like cancer and AIDS? Will you lament it or celebrate it like most of the sane world?

Are you aware that China's "one child" policy has been a miserable failure in terms of human rights? Are you aware, for example, that forced abortions and forced sterilizations take place in China:
http://www.time.com/time/world/article/ ... 36,00.html ? What do you think morally about things like forced abortions? Are you OK with that? Another effect of the "one child" policy in China has been the ever growing imbalance in the gender ratio in China:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5953508 .
Since sons are more valued than daughters in Chinese culture, girls are often quickly aborted in hopes of having a boy. This has created a problem that is, for one, causing China to commit a form of "demographic suicide" via a shortage of women and also has created a form of "gender genocide", that, along with policies such as forced abortion, amounts to a huge human rights, and more specifically women's rights, issue. So how about, sushilydv, are you willing to sacrifice human rights to "gaia" on the altar of population control?
Whether you like it or not, sushilydv, science and technology are here to stay. You can lament it all you want, and engage in all the regressive thinking you like, and post all the diatribes you like, but we will NOT be returning to living like cavemen no matter how much you may think such an idiotic notion would solve our problems. Indeed, quite the contrary is true. It will be the furthering of science that eventually solves our problems. We have already seen a lot of progress in just the past few years. With new technologies, things like cars, trains, trucks, and aircraft are becoming cleaner and more fuel efficient all the time. Appliances, computers, and the like, continue to be more energy efficient. Pollution controls have been put in place on things like power plants and other industries, and these will continue to improve as well. The answer is progress, not small-minded, "let's return to the stone age" regressive thinking.
